Idyllic Island Vibes
When you close your eyes to daydream about a tropical island, Mauritius itself is probably quite close to what you’re picturing. Rising from the Indian Ocean, some 500 miles east of Madagascar, off the coast of East Africa, it encompasses sandy beaches, placid lagoons, lush forests, and waterfalls — and it’s all surrounded by a thriving coral reef where scuba diving and snorkeling is top-notch.

Indeed, Mauritius’ natural beauty is unrivaled. But the atoll’s residents are an even greater treasure. A unique mix of cultures — from 10th-century Arab travelers and Portuguese explorers to a range of European settlers — has created a tight-knit and welcoming community that enjoys showing off and sharing their slice of paradise. So, be sure to take some time away from all the requisite island activities to visit pop-up markets, shopping centers, and casual streetside food stands to chat with the locals. For a more formal introduction to Mauritius’ heritage, visit the Natural History Museum in Port Louis and the UNESCO-designated Aapravasi Ghatsite — and definitely attend a traditional Sega music and dance performance.
Must-Do: The island is ringed by various white sandy beaches. Some are quiet, laid-back strands; others cater to active pursuits, including surfing and kayaking. Wherever you choose to stake your umbrella, long days at the beach should be at the top of your vacation to-do list.
Eat: The street food scene here is top-notch. Samosas, boulette dumplings, gateaux piments (chili cakes), and other hand-held delicacies make for delightful meals and are seemingly available on every corner.
Day-Trip: Head inland to Curepipe for a day in the city, where you can do some serious shopping. Wander the markets and peruse the boutiques for souvenirs ranging from jade and porcelains to pashminas and jewelry.
